    Convulsion is an episode characterized erratic, usually involuntary physical movements which may be accompanied by changes in conciousness. A convulsion can be a manifestation of a number of different medical conditions including seizures, severe infections, electrolyte imbalance, drug or alcohol overdose and alcohol withdrawal. The brain sends signals to the muscles for contraction and relaxation. The nerve cells are the messengers between the brain and the muscles. This causes electrical impulse in the brain. An abnormal electrical activity in the brain lead to convulsions.

What are the symptoms of convulsions?

  1. Decreased conciousness or total loss of conciousness.
  2. Rhythmic shaking or jerking and
  3. Unusual physical movements.

What causes convulsions?

        Convulsions can be caused by health issues that directly involve the brain or they may be caused by severe systemic (whole body) medical conditions that affects functions of the brain. They are:  
  • Extremely high blood sugar levels.
  • Snake bite.
  • Kidney failure.
  • Severe dehydration or over hydration.
  • Extremely low blood sugar levels.
  • High fever.
  • Drug overdose.
  • Severe malnutrition.
  • Electric shock.
  • Brain injury.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Brain tumour and
  • High blood pressure.
Again many of these medical conditions can cause severe changes in the body which may result in convulsive reaction. Some of these conditions can produce imbalance and electrolytes abnormalities that may lead to a convulsion. Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and calcium must be maintained within a certain concentration in the body in order to support normal physical activities. Fluid and electrolytes imbalances with normal functions of the brain, causing changes in conciousness and physical convulsions.

First Aid for Seizures

            If you see anyone having a seizures take the following steps:
  • Time how long it lasts.
  • Clear the area of anything hard or sharp object(s).
  • Loosen anything at the neck that may affect his or her breathing.
  • Turn the sufferrer on to his or her her head.
  • Do not put anything inside such a person MOUTH.
  • Call for MEDICAL ASSISTANCE, if seizures lasts more than 5 minutes, if such person is diabetic, pregnant or injured.

Convulsions Natural Treatments

1. Tetrapleura Tetrapleura (Aridan in Yoruba, Owoglo in Idoma; Oshosho, Uhiokriho, Osakirisa in Igbo; Dawo in Hausa; Uyayak in Ibibio; Edeminang in Efik) the aqueous extract of this plant exhibit anti-convulsant activities. Cut the part of the fleshy pod fruit or break them into pieces. Add some quantity in your cooking water. When it boil for some minutes the water will change colour. Remove and throw away the used part. Always add it in your cooking water.

            2. Mistletoe (Afomo isana in Yoruba) boil 2 or 3 handfuls of kolanut mistletoe in water with Turmeric (Gigir in Tiv; Atale pupa in Yoruba; Kurkur, Gangamau in Hausa; Iblue in Urhobo; Nwandumo, Ohuboboch in Igbo) After you had boiled them together in water. Pour the liquid in a flask. Drink 200 ml two times a day.

  3. Garlic (Tafarnuwa in Hausa; Ayuu in Igbo; Alubosa ayu in Yoruba) Chew 2 or 3 Fresh pods of Garlics two times a day with little water.

          4. Obtain fresh Plantain leaf. Dry it in shade away from direct sunlight. Once it is dried. Grind it to powder. Mix five tablespoons with 150 ml of Palm kernel oil (Adiagbon in Yoruba; Ano ipari in Idoma; Mai alayadi in Hausa; Ori kokodia in Urhobo; Mmanu Aki beke in Igbo). Mix them together. Always rub it all over your body after bath.

  5. Put the following items in a clay pot filled with water:

Turmeric

           

Fresh Garlic pods

Jatropha Curcas roots (Pignut, Physic nut in English; Olulu idu, Owulu idu in Igbo; Ishakpa in Urhobo; Lapalapa, Botuje, Iyalode in Yoruba; Oru ebo in Edo; Cii dazugu in in Hausa) boil them for 40 to 45 minutes. Drink 150 ml twice in a day.
